One of the largest bioscience states to date has been Arizona. The economy has been bad but the government has offered many of these emerging growth industries especially in the renewable energy sector to receive government loans and even free handouts. Even though many people can’t afford bio scientific solutions for solar and renewable energy the government is trying to stimulate this sector by offering huge tax savings benefits that cuts down on the cost by tens of thousands of dollars. The US government helping out this sector may have something to do with why Arizona is seeing growth in Bio Science.

Bio Science offers high wage jobs but with the slowing economy it takes a good bit of perseverance and working with the government incentives for both the startup company and consumers to see the advantage in jumping into this field.

Arizona continues to look for ways to grow their Bio Science sector as they see it as a huge potential for job and growth in their states economy.

At this time Arizona’s bioscience industry employs about 92,000 people in the Bioscience industry which is nothing laugh about.

Some information articles list jobs in various biosectors, including agricultural feedstock/chemicals, drugs/pharmaceuticals, medical devices and research/testing/medical laboratories, and solar energy and electricity technology. Hospitals and the medical industry continue to be the primary job creator for the Bioscience industry although as energy continues to increase in demand in the US we could see the energy sector biting into this number a little.

Governer Perry of Texas was denied the request to half the required ethanol mix the nation must add to fuel mixes over the course of 2008 and 2009. The amount of ethanol fuel the EPA requires equals close to 25 billion gallons of ethanol fuel. Governor Perry’s concern is that since Ethanol is created from corn that the fuel mix that the EPA is demanding is causing food prices to rise too high. There are further studies showing that ethanol could actually be considered to by a dirtier fuel than coal fired power plants. The argument is that by concentrating on ethanol you raise food prices and you destroy farm land that was once used for the production of the nations food.

Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute discovered that when you compare the benefits of green house gas reductions to the impact to ethanols overall environmental impact you end up worse off. This makes my point that having a balanced energy strategy makes more sense. You are able to keep things in moderation and there isn’t one primary fuel source that the nation relies upon. By having a balanced energy strategy for the nation if natural gas is low in storage then you don’t see electricity prices skyrocket. If ethanol becomes the primary fuel to power our cars you don’t see a gallon costing $7 like some countries who have gone completely over to an ethanol based fuel economy.

Some of the cleanest biofuel that does not have an adverse effect on environment while reducing green house gases is biomass waste. Big heaps of wood chips and debrees are examples of biomass that can be converted to clean energy. With the new technology in place to product cleaner power using traditional dirty fuels like coal and natural gas many governments and environmental groups are looking at the possibility of saving the environment using more traditional power and energy sources. Natural gas and coal are slowly becoming less evil. Algae biofuel is an up and coming fuel source that may compete with traditional corn based ethanol fuels to help ethanol continue to compete as a viable fuel source for protecting the environment and reducing green house gases.

Although governor Perry was denied his request by the EPA we are not out of luck as food prices have stabilized and new technology may allow us to find other sources besides corn to get the ethanol fuels we need.

Biofuel via Algae a Remarkable Discovery

Most people are waiting for the day when bio fuel energy makes a difference in the world to the degree that it hits the mass population. In some ways bio fuel energy is having a very good positive impact on a large energy consumer population. In Texas there is a large demand for green clean renewable energy. Electricity service customers want a green product that is carbon neutral and will not pollute the environment. What most Texas electric service companies are doing is buying green renewable energy credits in another state that has a bio fuel that can be turned into energy. These virtual clean energy credits are then used to sell clean electricity service to Texas energy consumers. The clean energy is not coming from a bio fuel waste in Texas but it is coming from somewhere and Texas is paying to keep the environment clean and carbon free.

Renewable Energy Credits and Alternative Clean Energy

The next step is to do away with states buying renewable energy credits to clean up the environment in a state that isn’t even their own. By using bio energy fuel resources in the local state a state like Texas can clean up the environment in their own territory. Unfortunately there are not enough companies with bio fuel resources available for Texas to be able to by renewable energy credits in their state territory. Recent news headlines have shown an increasing awareness of bio fuel resources such as algae. Cnet news said last year that the race to biofuel algae is only 1 year away. We are now a year away and a company by the name of Valcent Products has a bioreactor system that can be deployed on non-arable land, requires very little water due to its closed circuit process, does not incur significant labor costs and does not employ fossil fuel burning equipment, unlike traditional food/biofuel crops, like soy and palm oil.

Algae Biofuel Can Become a More Affordable Enery Solution

A bioreactor plant in El Paso gives an example of what this technology looks like. Shown below is the principal scientist and Valcent president and CEO Glenn Kertz with algae-filled bioreactors at the research and development facility in El Paso, Texas.

Bioreactor in El Paso Texas using Algae

By using algae as a fuel source you are creating an environmentally friendly biodiesel that has many uses. Many are saying that algae is fast becoming the new oil and will be used from powering and lubricating cars, tractors, and trucks as well as power generating plants. By using algae to create electricity you could cut out a lot of the carbon and pollution problems associated with coal fired ower generation facilities. We will always need some coal power as it is very cheap but being able to control the amount of carbon and pollution coming from our power plants allows for a cleaner environment and less government control. Texas has a large reliance on natural gas and coal fired power. New York uses a large diverse amount of power generation facilities such as hydro, nuclear, and natural gas. By adding algae biofuel to the mix we could do a lot to make energy more affordable to consumers.
